Hey there, I’m Mark.
I’m a story consultant, script editor, screenwriter, teacher, podcaster, narrative designer, coach, reader, film fan, and story structure nerd.
If it’s related to story, I’m in.
What I do
Story Consulting / Script Editing
If you are looking for someone to take a deep dive into your script, treatment, bible, etc. and help in shaping a script or story, you can check out how it works and contact me for further details.
Screenwriting
My first short film, This Conversation Has Been Removed, is in competition at Oscar-, BAFTA-, BIFA-, and IFTA-affiliated festivals. It has been selected for closing night at Hollyshorts, Foyle, PÖFF Shorts, Mecal Pro Barcelona, and many others.
In addition, it won the Audience Award for Best Short at Stony Brook Film Festival, Best Comedy at Worcester Film Festival, and has been nominated for Best Screenplay, Best Writer, Best Irish Short, Best Low Budget Short, and more at various festivals.
In between staring out windows, I’ve somehow written two more shorts, a TV pilot, and several feature length screenplays. I’m not totally sure how that happened.
Teaching
My background is in education, with nearly 15 years of classroom experience all over the world. I’ve taught on courses for the National Film School, Publishing Ireland, Griffith College, and developed and taught my own sold out course “The Tools (Not Rules) of Story Structure: The Craft of Storytelling” for the Irish Writers Centre multiple times.
Reading
I read scripts for clients and provide coverage. I have also read as an external judge for multiple competitions.
Clients have included The Black List, Ardán in conjunction with Screen Ireland and RTÉ, The Abbey Theatre, and many more.
You can contact me for further details.
Podcasting
As someone passionate about helping writers, I decided to create the podcast that I wished I had had when I was studying screenwriting in university. Mark Overanalyses Film focuses on the story structure of a different film (or TV series) every episode to explore what it really means and how it goes about meaning it.
I am also available as a guest for other podcasts.
Coaching
I offer one-to-one coaching sessions via Zoom. For more info, go to Coaching.
Narrative Design & Game Writing
In 2025, after completing a course with the amazing Charlene Putney (Baldur’s Gate 3, Divinity 2), I wrote and published my first piece of Interactive Fiction, Just Be Normal, Or Funny, Or Cool, Or Something, and was accepted the role of lead writer on a vertical slice for narrative strategy game Persevere by game studio Universe Or Nothing. As a lifelong gamer, I had an absolute blast finally getting to write for games myself, and I hope to do so much more in the future.
About me
When I was 10 years old, I won an in-class story competition writing about an all-star group of international terrorists taking over my primary school.
I’ve been chasing that high ever since.
Years later, in 2020, I achieved a first class honours on an MA in Screenwriting in the National Film School, Ireland. It was there that I realised two important points about myself.
First: I not only love to write (stories about international terrorists taking over primary schools), but I also love to help others with their writing.
Second: Someone once told me that whatever is more obvious to you than to others is your superpower in this world, and I discovered that I could see structure and story principles in action faster and plainer than some incredibly talented writers and creators around me.
Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to helping other writers and creators in whatever way I can to tell the stories they need to tell.
I’ve worked with screenwriters, directors, producers, national film & tv institutions, agencies, novelists, playwrights, and game developers on developing screenplays, bibles, outlines, treatments, and other materials.
I have taught for the Irish Writers Centre, Griffith College, Publishing Ireland, and on the very same MA programme I completed; become a reader of new work for The Abbey, Ireland’s national theatre; and created the podcast Mark Overanalyses Film, which takes a story structure approach to (over)analysing what great films mean and how they go about meaning it.
I have also, of course, written shorts, a TV pilot, and 3 feature length screenplays as well as many short stories, and I have been beyond delighted with the response to my award-winning first short film, This Conversation Has Been Removed.
If you want — or need — to tell a story, I may be able to help you.
