What is reading?

I read a script and write a reader’s reports. I like to tailor the report to the needs of the writer and the script, but I will always talk about the most important facets as I see them: characters, premise, structure, and style.

One other note on this: I personally see it as my role to focus on the story, not on what the market wants. It is very unlikely I will tell a writer something like “This should be a TV show” or “There’s no market for this”.

This is because:

1) I’m not a producer.

2) Very few people really know what any market wants.

3) Most importantly, it’s a damn lazy note to give! I’m here to help writers tell the stories they want to tell on the terms they want to tell them. As such, I will focus on whether or not I believe the story ‘works’, and why it does or doesn’t.

What do you get?

Depending on the length of the piece, you will receive a reader report of (generally) 2-6 pages covering what I believe to be the most important aspects of the script.
